How First Sight Media is Going Green with the Help of the HE Supplier Engagement Tools

At First Sight Media, we’ve always prided ourselves on being a technical powerhouse, delivering top-tier production services across the UK and abroad. So, with that in mind, we likely won’t initially strike you as a “green” or “eco-conscious” business...

However, sustainability is something we’re incredibly passionate about, and with the help of the Net Positive and Net Zero Supplier Engagement Tools, we’ve been able to take significant strides towards reducing our environmental impact. These tools have been instrumental in shaping our sustainability strategy and helping us work towards our goals. Here’s a closer look at what we’re doing.

The Net Positive and Net Zero Supplier Engagement Tools have become cornerstones of our sustainability journey. These tools are designed to help businesses like ours embed sustainability throughout the supply chain, which is crucial when your work spans multiple locations and involves numerous suppliers. By using these tools, we’ve developed action plans that align with our carbon reduction commitments, from making small but impactful changes in our daily operations to rethinking how we approach large-scale events.

We commend First Sight Media for its commitment to sustainability. Their participation in industry sustainability forums and efforts in carbon reduction provide an inspiring example of how companies in the video production and event planning industry can integrate environmental and social responsibility into their operations.

First Sight Media's Sustainability Report by Lancaster University

Our Sustainability Committee: In 2023 we recruited a member of staff from each of our departments to become part of our sustainability committee. The committee meets monthly to discuss new ideas, strategies and share updates on our current practices. The wider team are also given a chance to offer their own input and are given an overview at our quarterly company meetings to find out what the committee have been up to. By involving staff from across the company, we ensure that everyone has a voice in our green journey and that sustainability is a shared responsibility.

Office Green Days: One of our favourite initiatives has been our "Office Green Days." Once a month, we completely shut down our offices for a day. No lights, no computers, no energy consumption – just a full day dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint. We measure our energy meters before and after to see the impact of these shutdowns, and it’s been eye-opening. Not only do these days help us save energy, but they also serve as a powerful reminder that small actions can have a big impact.

Event Tech Live Vegas: We offer our clients hybrid and online solutions as a way to save on carbon emissions and waste. In May 2024, we brought our hybrid and virtual expertise to Event Tech Live – Las Vegas for one of the UK’s biggest event organisers. Our main stage content was streamed back to our Hybrid Studio in Oxfordshire, enabling us to do what we do best—capture high-quality content—with minimal crew and equipment on-site. This approach significantly reduced the need for travel and resources, cutting down on emissions while maintaining exceptional production quality. It’s a great example of how hybrid events can provide a more sustainable alternative to traditional event production.

Solar Panels Installed

We’re thrilled to announce that we’ve taken a major step toward sustainability by installing solar panels at our office! With 122 panels now in place, we’re generating free, renewable, and clean electricity to power our appliances and operations. This move not only reduces our reliance on the grid but also significantly lowers our environmental impact, aligning with our commitment to a greener future.

Looking ahead: Our sustainability journey is far from over.

Planting Trees for Every 500 Miles

Given the nature of our work, which involves a lot of travel, we wanted to find a way to offset some of the carbon emissions generated by our three company vans. With this in mind in September 2024 we launched our ‘Plant a Tree Campaign’. For every 500 miles our vans collectively travel, we’re planting a tree. We’re also planning to partner with different charities for each 1,000-mile milestone, supporting a wide range of environmental causes along the way.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

With the help of the Net Supplier Engagement Tools, we’ve made significant progress in reducing our carbon footprint and embedding sustainability into every aspect of our business. But we’re not stopping here. We know there’s always more that can be done, and we’re excited to continue this journey towards a greener future.
